Wind of Change

The many recent carnivals of Fun In The Sun marked the end of surf season on the west coast of Bali. As the tradewinds start to change and the rain pours down in the early hours of the morning, it's time for wet season surfing on the east side of the island!

Team rider Rebecca 'Becky' Sheedy is part of the huge contingent of surfers making the move from popular dry season spots such as Padang Padang and Uluwatu, to Serangan and areas around Nusa Dua. Just like the many faces of Bali, how does the east side compare to the west of Bali? Summer gets together with Becky for some wet season Surfer Girl talk.

Summer went by pretty quickly. How is Serangan this season?
Serangan seems a bit different for me know coz I can almost guarantee a good surf there coz i've finally figured out the tide and its good for diving and surfing. The warungs are getting rebuilt and there seems to be less tourists (mind you the japanese tourist season is yet to kick in) It's only offshore or windless for a couple of hours in the morning.

When are you going to surf other spots on the east side?
I will surf the other spots when the conditions are right and the winds become more predictable, otherwise you can burn out just looking for the waves. A few of the spots need big swells and others need an offshore to be worthy.

Did you say there were tiger shark sightings down at Ulus the other day? What's up with that? What's happening now?
The sharks are hungry...yes they have decided humans taste better than plastic bags and are an easy catch, they are not really keen on getting punched in the face though.

I'm worried about the weather pattern.
Hey, ever since I saw the doco on the coming ice age, which you've definately got to see if u haven't already, look all u got to do is build a really good bomb shelter and stock it full of supplies. Most impotantly seeds and water and 'how to live happily underground for a few years books', and be prepared for the real change.

Great....So tell me about the other big things happening in your surfing life. What about the Padang contest?
Yes i am very very excited about the next padang padang contest because its one of the worlds most amazing waves and very humbling.

(Becky surfed her way to a cool 2nd place in this year's Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup. Held in perfect 2-3ft Bingin, it was the biggest girls surf comp in Indonesia, with surfers from many different countries. More info can be found here

Are we in for another awesome wet season?!?!
Of course the wet season is great, so many good wave options, surf with the dugongs, the place is more alive with plant growth from all the rain and nice diving and snorkelling spots and heaps of girls from japan come to surf so there is plenty of girl surfing action.

Do you have any intentions of surfing the upcoming Margaret River Classic? Does that mean you'll be down under for a while?
Ya, the Margaret River classic is my favourite contest in Oz. its a huge comp for the local West Australians with the entire south west community getting involved. The surf is always good and its always a great weekend full of awesome surfing and lots of laughs. I will be down under for at least a couple of months and i want to surf lots of big swells with big surf when I am there and surf with my friends from home and check out how much the local grommets have already improved.

Wow. Sounds like you're gonna be gone for a while then. I'm looking forward to the wet season myself. It's all so different and fresh from all the spots we've been surfing the past season. Good luck and I'll see you around!
