Margaret River Classic
At the start of November every year Australia’s Margaret River in the South West corner of Western Australia hosts its largest, and longest running annual contest, The Margaret River Classic. This year marked the contests 29th anniversary and the weather gods provided a beautiful, warm and wave filled weekend for the contestants and appreciative spectators.
Western Australia’s top female surfers surfed their heats with plenty of enthusiasm as clean and consistent 3-4ft waves rolled in endlessly over the three-day period. Margaret River is famous for its large and powerful surf but provided completely playful waves for the girls to compete in. Some of the local contestants were as young as 14 years and surfed the world famous waves throughout the event with complete confidence and joy and all the girls performed some great maneuvers in the pristine conditions.
A few Humpback whales breeched out the back of the contest area during the event on their way to Antartica as they follow the West Australian coast south with their baby calves. At one stage a huge Humpback whale was only 100m out from the surfers, probably appreciating the great waves and the great surfing themselves.
The final results in the closely contested girls final were:
1st Felicity Palmateer
2nd Becky Sheedy – Surfer Girl Team Rider!!
3rd Mes Lumsdale
4th Bronte Macaulay
